August 24, 2023, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Republic of Tajikistan, in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan and with the technical support of UNDP in Tajikistan, held the first meeting of the Interdepartmental Working Group "Comprehensive water resources management" of the National Development Council under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The meeting was opened by Shoimzoda Jamshed - First Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan, Ozan Sevimli - Permanent Representative of the World Bank in Tajikistan, Lenny Montiel - Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program in Tajikistan, Manuchera Majon - Coordinator of the Secretariat of the National Development Council under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The meeting was attended by representatives of government agencies, development partners, the private sector, and community organizations.
During the meeting, presentations were made by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan on Progress Implementation of the Water Sector Reform Program of the Republic of Tajikistan, HELVETAS Company on Legal Basis for Integration of Basin Water Management Plans into Development Plans of Administrative-Territorial Units. Company "Gidrofil" on the draft State Water Supply and Drainage Program for the period up to 2032, IWRM, UNDP on the draft National Water Strategy for the period up to 2040.
The participants of the Interdepartmental Working Group meeting discussed the issues of the draft State Program of Drinking Water Supply and Wastewater Elimination for the period up to 2032 and other sectoral programs.
The purpose of the meeting is to adopt and implement decisions on improvement of the current water legislation, organizational structure of water resources management, planning, use and protection of water resources in river basins, water protection, prevention of negative impact of water, increasing investment and financing in the water sector, improving information provision of the water sector, rehabilitation and construction of water infrastructure.
At the end of the meeting Shoimzoda Jamshed - First Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan told about the draft National Water Strategy of the Republic of Tajikistan for the period up to 2040 and other sectoral programs within the framework of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
